Bruckner 8 tour!
Bruckner wrote the first version of his 8th symphony between 1884 and 1887, in the shadow of the enormous success of his 7th symphony. Bruckner sent it to conductor Hermann Levi, who wrote back that he could not perform the symphony in its current state. In 1892, the symphony finally premiered in Vienna after several adjustments to the work.
Bruckner did not expect a repeat of the success of his 7th symphony, Vienna was mainly Brahms’s camp against Wagner. The 8th symphony was therefore also received with mixed reactions in Vienna: while some walked out of the hall during the performance, Bruckner was praised by others for his composition.
